iriver CXW-2G : The Complete Package

First, it is very portable. If you buy Velcro / cover accessories, the little shed. E "is smaller than a deck of cards and is very easy. Secondly, the film is surprisingly good. See the movie length is no problem. Third, the capacity is not a problem for me. Convert video in full format compatible iRiver with, to reduce the size of ~ 5 GB and up to 400 megabytes. Save the two films a lot of space for hundreds (even thousands) of songs. It works for me.

This is a unique product. I bought a few months ago and had enough time to learn the details of the Clix. First, the navigation is simple. Just to wherever you want to get, and the desired function. Integration with Windows Media Player is relatively flat. This is a solid player good battery life. Radio works well. The screen is really nice. I've never seen small-screen device. The only problem is that 2 GB is not like a lot, but what they buy, and other variables.

A stitch in time, can not play the music when a computer that is the primary way to download if you have is a second card. In addition, it is a great multimedia player.

IRiver is a small and large. If I my iPod Nano is bought cheap and no video. I wanted a video player and MP3 players will travel and vacation. This device is perfect.

I do not want to spend too much time on the user interface, click on the D-only say that I liked. Not as cool as the iPod, but the place that the reader is much smaller than the Nano, which is very nice.

The only drawback I see with this player is not really the fault of the iRiver. Apple has far to iTunes Music Store and its rivals behind Windows. It is so far away.

If the value of portability to the FM radio and video, and then a great company iRiver .

If your in the market for an mp3 player move on avoid this model and manufacture along with any other mp3 player by this company.Keep reading reviews and look for another manufacture.So far the experience with this mp3 player out the box is not a good one.Between the software out the box to the manufactures web site no support for windows 7.You need to use compatibility mode to get the software installed off the cd.Once the software is installed again you must use compatibility mode to run the software.Even using compatibility mode the software has issues of instability and the software itself locking up and crashing.The only way to get firmware updates is through the software.The only problem with that is the software sync does not work and you keep getting "network error try again" when try to update your firmware for the device.You cannot download the firmware off the manufactures site and do firmware updates manually from the downloaded firmware off your hard drive.Checked software setting and everything is set up for this device.You cannot download updates off the manufactures web site manually neither.Try to get tech support is non-existent.If you call the support number you get a voice message saying all reps are busy and leave your name and phone number and we will call you back.So far 4 days and no return phone call.E-mail support is the same way also.You don't even get an automated response letting you know they even received your e-mail.If you go to the manufactures web site and check the features of this model it says that there is a FM schedule recording function that this model has.That was the main feature of why I even purchased this model for that function.I thought it would be nice to record an FM broadcast of a radio show and listen to it at a later time.I read the instructions looked all over in the software settings on this model.I had to do a search for an Iriver forum to find other buyers of Iriver mp3 players saying they had the same problem I was.There is no schedule FM recording function at all in this unit.You can record an FM broadcast but, you do it manually yourself and stop it when your are done recording.I don't even know why they say this device even has that function right on their web site.Another terrible feature of this device is the software video playback is very limited.You also must use their crappy conversion software to convert the video file into another format for the player before you can even drop the file onto the player itself.As for the software on this device nothing special at all very generic and bland.You will also do alot of trying to figure out this devices built in software on your own.This model comes with a quick start guide that is no help at all and a cd with pdf instructions on the features the of the software you install on your computer that is of no help also.There is nothing in the package at all to help you figure out the menu system of this device.If I would have read a review like the one listed above I would have never went through the hassel of buying anything by this manufacture.One thing I have learned by this experience is to check everything out about the manufacture of these devices before you make a purchase.Even check out their web site and try to send an email to the manufacture about a question on the device you are buying or try to call them to see how their customer service is with a question.Some of these mp3 players are expensive not cheap depending on the model you go with and with the shipping and the wait time involved in getting your order you do not want to go through all the trouble I have had with this manufacture.If my experience changes by this company's tech support responding to my e-mail or phone call I will then repose another review.Hope this review helps everyone out and to avoid the misleading information about this product.

Outstanding Value, BUT..., January 12, 2010

Package is nicely sized for the unit. It is not overpackaged and doesn't come in a big plastic bubble you have to hacksaw your way into. The E150 has good form and fit, a clean appearance and unusual for any mp3 player or small electronics, it has fitted covers for its USB and sD slots to keep out dust dirt and moisture.

Quality of output sound from the player is very good, and output power is comparable to the iPod but earphones are minimal, below quality of average mp3 player units especially at higher frequencies. No big deal if you already have good earphones.

It is too big to be a clip-on type of unit. It is about twice the size and mass of the iPOD nano. It has a comparable play-per-charge. It has too many functions to be simple. It has six major modes of operation: Music, Video, Picture, FM Radio, Text, Record.

The interface is clutzy and non-intuitive. The main controls are 4 directional buttons which are beneath the plastic surface of the unit, centered on a square select button. The controls often do not respond on first push, maybe bad debouncing circuitry? User Manual is basic but could be clearer. For instance, the main navigation buttons to be used are installed as I said below the flat plastic cover, around the square select button. They are indicated by small barely visible caret figures made up of black dots. It wasn't obvious to me that you push on the flat surface where the caret symbols were and the manual didn't make an effort to clue one in.

Radio has awkward tuning controls, one must hit the 'up' button for higher freqs instead of the more intuitive 'right', 'down' instead of 'left'.

But if you are patient, the E150 does many tricks, plays many formats of music, has a good radio, plays videos, stores and shows various data formats.

AND It has two notable interfaces in addition to all the others:

1) It has a slot for microsD cards- the same idea as on the Sansa clip+. The E150 manual indicates that a card is to be installed when the E150 is off. in order to hear music on extenal card you must go to MUSIC>Dir List and select External (versus Internal). This is awkward.

2) It has a line-in input. It can take 2-channel input from an external source and capture it for playback in Windows Media format. I am not aware of ANY other comparable unit with this feature.

CONCLUSION: Well worth the money if you use it, but not likely to remain in the marketplace because it is not obvious how to use it and it isn't being promoted heavily. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that it isn't being made any more.
Construction Quality is adequate but I suspect not durable.

This is by far the best player for the price. Amazing sound quality, unbeatable. The SRS-WOW effect is makes u actually feel the music. FM? u want it u got it with a very good stereo reception. I had also bought Sony MDR-ED21LP Fontopia In-The-Ear Headphones for 9 bucks and an arm band for 10 bucks, so for a total of 83 bucks. an amazing player with an amazing headphones and lol an alrite arm band. No dont think of watching movies in it. its not meant for that. some people say the buttons are weird yeah they are but i got used to it in one day. and people complain about the artists not coming in one order? well yeah they dont, i always put the songs in shuffle mode. so if anyone want to save money well dont wait too long to but it.

1.This player does not have strong bass sound. The music sounds flat and uninspired.

2. This player does not sync ratings and playcounts with windows media player 10 or 11, EVEN though it is listed as "mtp."

3. The artists, genres, and albums stored on the device are listed in RANDOM order. You will NEVER find the music that you are looking for especially if you fill it up to more than a gigabyte worth.

4. The d-click interface is not responsive. you will usually end up having to click twice for it to recognize that you clicked at all.

I am not angry about my purchase, just unsatisfied.

I bought this from Tigerdirect.com and you can not return it using the website. You must call the customer service number and wait to be put on hold, and hung up on before you get through to someone to help you. The from they send you with the return address on it says there is a 15% restocking fee if the item is not "defective" and you must pay return shipping.

This was my experience and I just wanted to share.

good quality material. fits nicely. only minor complaint is the charger plug in area is a bit of a fuss to plug in due to the protective cover which resides over it but would still mos def recommend this to anyone. Worth the purchase if you want your SPINN protected.

First of all I must say that the looks itself will make you buy this item. The Spinn feature is really attractive and easy to use for navigation and selection. Touchscreen is not that intuitive but works well. FM recording is also a good feature to look at. The sound quality is great. The video quality on 3.3 inch OLED screen is awesome. It is very light and portable. Overall a good player under $100.

"Poor customer support" 2009-09-01

This is a nice product with decent features, good sound, etc. However, ours is defective and iriver has refused to fix it.

When the battery on the SPINN runs dow, the date resets to sometime in 2005. Not a huge problem in and of itself, but it has the side effect of confusing Rhapsody, so that none of the licensed content will play. It was very difficult to figure out how to fix this problem: relicensing certainly didnt help. nor did formatting from windows or Rhapsody. iriver support happily blamed Rhapsody for this problem and was no help. Eventually I figured out how to use the SPINN reformat capability (which I found is a VERY unintuitive place) to format the drive. A couple hours later, after all the songs were reloaded, we were good to go - for a few days, when it happened again.

I contacted iriver, who admitted that this was not normal operation, but explained that if I charged it enough I could live with it. I asked to have the SPINN repaired, and after verifying that I was under warrantee, they sent me an RMA. I mailed the SPINN in, waited two weeks, and got it back with a note that they had changed the settings to change the discharge rate! When the battery dies - and it has - I still need to reformat the SPINN.

Two weeks later, iriver has yet to answer any of three emails I have sent them asking them to honor their warrantee.

Stay away!!!

Ok. So my mom has one and we always have a problem with this. Every time the battery dies out or is completely drained it will not turn back on. Like we tried charging it and everything, but it doesn't even recognize the charger or whatsoever. It just will not work once the battery is completely drained. This is not the first time either,we've sent it twice to the manufacturer because of this problem and today it happened again. Although my mom should just charge more often instead of letting it die like that. THIS SHOULD NOT HAPPEN. Plus i don't like their service either, they take forever and asked us the same question over and over again. I don't know if this has happened to others, but it has happened to us many times..

This is a great mp3 player. It has many different options and functions that the user can tailor to their needs. Extremely flexible. Supports many different types of files. One complaint is that the iriver software is a bit slow and funky, but it's certainly better than iTunes. The touch screen works well. If I were to nit-pick, I'd say that playing music/video while using a bluetooth headset makes the interface a bit slow and sluggish, but it's certainly not anything to really complain about. Great overall product and way better than anything comparative from iPod.

I just can't believe how many reviews of this product jump over the obvious facts. And I mean professional reviews, not the ones here on Amazon. The screen is simply amazing to look at! Forget the technical details like it is an OLED screen and it only has thousands of colors, just look at it! Watch a video on it! It plays normal .avi files without any conversion. On top of that it works acceptably as a podcast player.

The only negative thing is the lack of knowledge about this product. Even the company seems clueless about it, it says in irs site that it requires Windows, but, by changing a setting, you can use it with Linux or Mac OS X without a problem. The software is for Windows, but the player works. It isn't perfect, the interface could use some improvement and I have lost any hope of finding fonts, themes, and games for the SPINN, as no one seems to be paying attention to it. Which is a pity, a world where there are only iPods as Mp3 players is as sad as a world where there is only Windows as an OS.

If you do not like the iPod, give the SPINN a try.

I have an old car with a tape player that doesn't work, but the radio does and by purchasing this transmitter now I can play my ipod and a portable cd player and the sound is great. I live in Rochester so there are space in between radio stations and you can get a clear sound if you live in a larger city you might get interference.

I've been using this unit for over 3 years now, first with a Creative Zen Vision: M player and now with my iPod Classic. It's easy to use and I like the fact I can preset 3 different stations to use. Living near New York City and traveling periodically to Northeast and Southeast Pennsylvania, I sometimes need to switch from one station to another because the reception gets very fuzzy; however, with 3 presets I can always choose another that works. Just push another button on the unit and on the radio, and you're done. Some units I looked at only had specific stations they used, while this one allows you to choose on your own. The sound quality isn't as good as using the built-in CD player in my car, but I wouldn't expect that since the sound is being carried by the radio. Still, it's good enough for listening in the car for a long trip and it's very convenient to be able to choose from any album on my iPod.

"Portable Music Source for the Audiophile" 2010-02-25

I was looking for a portable source that was strong enough to power a pair of Sennheiser HD595's without having to drag an amp around. My Blackberry and iPod just dont do justice to the 595's the way my receiver at home does but I guess thats to be expected. Neither player has a custom EQ setting and the volume settings leave a lot to be desired. I spent a few days going back and forth between the Cowon S9 and the Samsung P3. The reviews for these players seemed to point to audiophile sound and thats exactly what I was looking for. I decided to buy the S9 because its EQ and BBE processing options are a perfect match for the lower quality portion of my music collection. I definitely made the right choice.

I am absolutely blown away by how incredible this little device can sound. Some of the most underrated features of this player are the BBE+ sound options. I listen to a lot of electronic music (trance,dnb,etc) and much of my selection is <>

The user interface also very fun to use even though it does have a slight learning curve. The Zune and the iPod Touch are a tad more snappy in the UI department but thats being picky. The best part about the UI is that you can customize it to your liking. There are dozens of different themes you can download for free. To top it off is one of the nicest looking screens on a portable....anything! I actually think the AMOLED screen on the S9 rivals the contrast of my Panasonic G10 plasma. Its that good! The whole device is just that much more fun to use when screen is so pleasing to look at.

If you have a set of relatively low impedance phones, I think its pretty safe to say that the Cowon S9 can drive the hell out of them without an amp. You wont be disappointed.

It really is a great device - but the UI is not that great unless you customize it. Even then, there can be problems. The screen is GORGEOUS, best on the market without question. I have to say the sound is spectacular, but... the software is terrible!!! I spent a lot of time putting my cds on but only a few songs were transferred. It took a long time to rip the songs then there was only one or two that actually appeared in the music library. They were all selected and they all chugged through but only a few showed up. Also, the unit is constantly needing the reset button pressed. They should make it part of the on switch. One can hardly get to the reset button. It is to small for a pen or pencil. You'll need a needle! It makes me long for my old Ipod! No fuss no muss!!! Anyway, I hope this review helps. Sum up: If sound and long battery life is more important than anything else buy this unit but if you hate to mess with substandard user interface software get the Ipod!

1)You must use JetAudio to convert video files to .AVI, otherwise S9 freezes. I have also determined that you better load all your music through the JA conversion process or you will be missing lots of TRACKS. Don't know whats up with that. Some songs willload while other songs simply disappear from the album, sucks!!!!!
2)Ear buds, Junk. A first time user that tries these will be put off. The supplied denigrate the audio potential.They are the tinny-est sounding units avail., this is after burning them in for 5hours unattended on a 100W amp with the BASS maxed and VOLUME pumped! Even after that they still sounded like S@#$! Cowon should seriously consider not including ear buds if this is all they can offer. My iPod ones even sound better. Tangly cord too. Junk.
3)UI is touchy and not user-friendly as in not intuitive at all.
4)Weight, feels cheap. I swear my 4gb flash weighs more.

I plugged this into my car's MP3/Aux jack and was blown away. This unit provides an excellent source audio for your car. S9 is for the person that does not need the touchy-feely interface of an ipod or zune. People should spend $100 for a set of Grado s80s or even some cheapo Koss cans. Doing so will unlock loads of bass, crystal like highs. If you like lots of gee-whiz features and like being told what you can or cannot listen to; get an ipod. This player has bugs and is designed for the critical listener. Someone that knows what they are after and have the patients to configure an open source MP3 player.

I bought this as a gift. The first one I bought was defective. Amazon immediately replaced it. The biggest problem with the second was that is turns itself on whenever it wants to, draining the battery. the screen is easy to read and the music palys great. It's easy to load. I wouldn't buy another however. Go with iPod.

"Decent, but won't buy another one" 2009-05-01

I don't want to make this a long review. This was my first MP3 player and I generally refuse to buy apple products so after a bit of research I bought one of these about 3 years ago. Up until a couple months ago it worked fine. The user interface with this thing is OKAY...you can only scroll up and down with the "slider". Upon reaching the bottom of any menu the curser doesn't "warp" back to the top, instead you have to manually scroll back up. So if you're listing hundreds of songs alphabetically and you reach ZZ Top, you have to scroll all the way back up to ABBA (note: I don't have ABBA on my player, just using it as an example!) insted of the curser just warping back to the top. This isn't a problem per se, unless you're like me and one day your slider stops working and will only scroll up, and not down. So basically I have a perfectly functioning iRiver other than the slider, and I can't do things like select songs, adjust the volume, or navigate the menus AT ALL, rendering the device utterly useless. Pity. I guess 3 years is an okay lifespan for such a device. I took it mountain biking and it probably got bounced around in pockets and such, but it was never dropped or slammed. Seems to be a sturdy device all around.

And yes, the thing had a tendency to freeze up and requires you to push a tiny button with a paper clip or thumb tack. Very annoying when you're without one and you can't get the device to do anything because it's frozen. It is pretty much plug and play, meaning you plug in the transfer cable to your PC via USB and you can drag and drop. It does come with proprietary transfer software but it's clunky - it also doesn't like to play nicely with vista even with a software update available from iRiver. Works fine with XP but the best thing is to just not use it at all.

"A very frustrating player - don't buy" 2009-04-17

I've owned a variety of MP3 players, and had high hopes for this one. Alas, it has fallen short on so many fronts that I have just about abandoned all hopes of using it.

1. It doesn't work with Media Player 11. Media Player 11 will download the files (taking about an hour on a new Gateway with Vista), but won't copy down the ID3v information. So you can't get to music by artist or album, only by searching through directories via its "Browse" function.

2. It isn't 20 gigs. With formatting, it's about 18 gigs. Not a huge thing, and common to most hard drives, but annoying to know you got less than asked for.

3. It's quirky. It's frozen on me repeatedly, eg after MEdia Player says okay to disconnect, forcing me to find a pin to press its reset. I'm used to this somewhat with, say, the Creative player, but with this unit, it happens frequently. Unless you carry a hatpin, it can be annoying to have to reboot.

4. Their website is horrible. To download drivers or even their documentation, you visit a website in China, which uses a flash interface and Flash's HTTP data retrieval, which is dismally slow. It takes several minutes to bring up a list, even with a fast connection. Scrolling is abysmal. They don't even list the H10 in their list of products. In short, the website is as un-user-friendly as possible.

In short, to someone who's looking around for a hassle-free MP3 player, to steer away from the iriver H10. I feel cheated.

"Great product - best brand of MP3 player I've had." 2009-01-15

The only downside is that it IS a hard-disk MP3 player. That said, with the SRS-WOW surround features, and excellent durability and sound quality this is an EXCELLENT product.

I myself managed to pick one up at Staples for about $150 when they were clearing them out (There are no more U.S. retailers for the IRivers...unfortunately). If you can get one, you really should! Even if you need to order from an overseas e-Tailer.

Average running battery-life I've gotten out of one charge: 8-12 hours
Average standby battery-life: more than 2 weeks.

Only problem I've had is related to the hard-disk - it sometimes gets a little twitchy and needs to be reset. It also sometimes has trouble syncing with MediaPlayer - but both of these are once every 3-6 month deals when I've been messing with the back-end file system.

Also - it's a PlaysForSure MP3 - you can use it ANYWHERE except Zune and Itunes.

It takes too long to load songs into this product.It took me all of two months to load 500 songs into this device as opposed to 2 days on a new Sansa MP3 player I purchased recently.About 2yrs after purchase,the battery lost its' capacity to hold charge.When fully charged,it lasted 90 minutes as opposed to 9hrs when new.Other than these problems,this MP3 player is very durable.I remember it falling to the ground from about 4ft twice without malfunctioning.It finally died completely when it accidentally came in contact with water that got sprayed on the strip on its' front.Overall,I give this product a B-.

Package is nicely sized for the unit. It is not overpackaged and doesn't come in a big plastic bubble you have to hacksaw your way into. The E150 has good form and fit, a clean appearance and unusual for any mp3 player or small electronics, it has fitted covers for its USB and sD slots to keep out dust dirt and moisture.

Quality of output sound from the player is very good, and output power is comparable to the iPod but earphones are minimal, below quality of average mp3 player units especially at higher frequencies. No big deal if you already have good earphones.

It is too big to be a clip-on type of unit. It is about twice the size and mass of the iPOD nano. It has a comparable play-per-charge. It has too many functions to be simple. It has six major modes of operation: Music, Video, Picture, FM Radio, Text, Record.

The interface is clutzy and non-intuitive. The main controls are 4 directional buttons which are beneath the plastic surface of the unit, centered on a square select button. The controls often do not respond on first push, maybe bad debouncing circuitry? User Manual is basic but could be clearer. For instance, the main navigation buttons to be used are installed as I said below the flat plastic cover, around the square select button. They are indicated by small barely visible caret figures made up of black dots. It wasn't obvious to me that you push on the flat surface where the caret symbols were and the manual didn't make an effort to clue one in.

Radio has awkward tuning controls, one must hit the 'up' button for higher freqs instead of the more intuitive 'right', 'down' instead of 'left'.

But if you are patient, the E150 does many tricks, plays many formats of music, has a good radio, plays videos, stores and shows various data formats.

AND It has two notable interfaces in addition to all the others:

1) It has a slot for microsD cards- the same idea as on the Sansa clip+. The E150 manual indicates that a card is to be installed when the E150 is off. in order to hear music on extenal card you must go to MUSIC>Dir List and select External (versus Internal). This is awkward.

2) It has a line-in input. It can take 2-channel input from an external source and capture it for playback in Windows Media format. I am not aware of ANY other comparable unit with this feature.

CONCLUSION: Well worth the money if you use it, but not likely to remain in the marketplace because it is not obvious how to use it and it isn't being promoted heavily. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that it isn't being made any more.
Construction Quality is adequate but I suspect not durable.

A really nice player
iriver P7 16 GB Multimedia Player (Silver) has style. Not everybody may fall in love with it, but it has more style than any small gadget I've used in a long time.

Playing music and videos is simple and straightforward, the main thing I was looking for in a player. Boot-up time is very short, thumbs up. Subtitle support? Check! Battery life? Excellent.

Why 4 stars, not 5? I have three complaints. First, the player is too picky about video format encoding. Second, a proprietary USB port... not again! There is no reason to use yet another unique cable to connect to a USB port. A mini-USB would work perfectly well for this device. Finally, touch sensitivity of the screen is terrible. You have to touch, then press, then press again, then jam your finger into the screen really hard and hope it works. It's a good thing this is not a PDA, you don't have to click too many buttons to enjoy the playback.

"For the price of the iRiver E100 it stands pretty well on it's own. The sound quality is excellent and the numerous features it offers over similar MP3 players is a plus as well. The main problem I had with the player was the plastic body. And after a few drops on the ground the player still managed to function until the last fall. The screen cracked in three places and the earphones jack barely functions anymore. Stronger body means longer lasting product for those clumsy consumers.

Finicky, but good audio
"The good thing about this little player is that the audio quality is very good. Not the best of these little players, but quite good. Be careful with the various enhancements, though as it is easy to get it set to where the device digitally clips the audio, resulting in some clicks, or worse. The included headphones are surprisingly good.

So why only 3 stars - well, out of the box this device is all but unusable. The usual firmware upgrades are a version of Russian Roulette. Each new firmware fixes some bugs and creates others. The latest firmware seems to have the fade-in/out stuck on - okay for isolated pop tracks, but not so great for classical or albums.

The supplied software program is poorly documented, and very buggy - I've crashed mine three times in a couple of hours. An attempt to upgrade results in download failures (which it tries to blame on the network connection - perhaps to the iriver server, but it's definitely not a problem with my internet connection).

When using drag'n'drop to load up media files, the files are arranged in random order. You can fix the order with the supplied software, but even then, sometimes you have to move a single track into position, as the automatic alphabetizing seems to work, but doesn't move quite all of the files into place.

Playlists are only accepted from the software app - standard playlists are such as m3u are not recognized. The player plays flac, but Windows Media Player is unable to load them onto the device in MTP mode. You have to switch to MSC(?) mode, which is better anyway, since that gives you the file system access.

Be careful how you disconnect - if you do it by turning off the device after a download, expect to lose or corrupt your newly downloaded files. You need to use the app disconnect function and then let the device build its database before turning it off.

There are numerous reports of this device being finicky about what sort of SDHC micro cards it likes. Folks seem to have good luck with the class 6 ones, but less so with others. I have an 8GB SDHC Class6, I got for it, but haven't yet tried it.

Now for the big disappointment - video - it seems to only like the format created by the application in transfer mode, despite the specs. My AVI files created by handbrake in what would seem to be an avi format that complies with the device spec were not playable. The app doesn't seem to recognize DVD VIDEO_TS directories for movies, so you will have to rip to some intermediate format and then let the app convert to a WMV on transfer - conversion of the files seems to take around 30 minutes per hour of video (on an AMD X2 5200, with the CPUs both running nearly flat out).

Once you have a playable video, the display is rather crappy - posterization is common, and the viewing angle is quite narrow. Battery life seems to be somewhat less than specified. It's touch and go whether I can get a full day of audio playing from it.

The control switches seem to be poorly debounced, so sometimes the device seems unresponsive or goes past what you are looking for. Other than that, browsing/navigation is easy, provided you know a couple of the tricks to get to set audio settings tucked away in the Music screen.

I was just about to send this back after fiddling with for several hours, but by then I had discovered enough to make it work acceptably for audio.
Straigth wav(e) files are not supported. I don't know anything about the MP3 capabilities, since I wanted the lossless FLAC. Audio playback is not gapless, so certain ablums will have annoying breaks where they shouldn't or you will have to rip the entire ablum as a single track. I sold it for half-price to my son, and he's happy with it. I have replaced it with Cowon D2+. I figure it's better to let him use/lose the iriver than a more expensive, better performing unit.

Summary: Not too bad for audio, especially if you can get a price around $70, which comes from some other sites. For video, spend $125 and get the Cowon D2(+). It's not perfect either, but has quite good video with a wide viewing angle, and the audio quality there is into the top tier, as a very excellent sounding device, worthy of a good set of headphones, such as the Sony MDR-V6."

I got this player because I wanted a one I could take out to the woods with my me, plug in a decent microphone and record acoustic guitar songs. This player works great. What the specs don't say is that the line in is stereo not just mono, so you can use nice stereo mics, so its better than I thought. Also the recording quality is really quite good through the line-in. Its comparable to the line-in on my macbook.

Beyond that, its a decent player. The battery life is good, the sound quality is fine (a little worse than my ipod but WAY better than my $20 player) The headphones are okay, the video is watchable. Its a little slower getting around than my ipod, it lags a little but it really doesn't bother me much.

One thing you should know is that you need access to a Windows computer when you first get it to configure the player and install the latest firmware, and also to put movies on it. After that, you change its settings so it can communicate with Linux or your Mac, which it does fine after the changes have been made.

The only disappointment was with the Micro SD expansion. I have not found a way to record directly to it, and it freezes on startup if it is inside, so you can only insert it once its on. Also it doesn't integrate with the music library, so unless you intend to watch movies/listen to long audiobooks from the Micro SD card, just skip the expansion card.

However because of the quality stereo line in recording, I give it 5 stars.

In 1999, Duk-Jun Yang and Rae-Hwan Lee left Samsung Electronics, along with five colleagues. They formed ReignCom, with Yang as CEO, originally as a semiconductor distributor, then decided to capitalize on the growing MP3 player market. They decided to outsource manufacturing to AV Chaseway, located in Shenzhen, China, and contract product design to INNO Design, an industrial design company in Palo Alto, CA, while keeping R&D in-house.

Their first iriver product was the iMP-100, a portable CD player capable of decoding MP3 data files on CDs, released in November, 2000. It and a later model, the iMP-250, were rebranded and sold by SonicBlue in the United States under the Rio Volt name. Iriver sold later models with its own SlimX brand, billing them as the thinnest MP3 CD players in the world, before jumping to other types of players. The company rose to the No. 1 position in the global market, before being displaced by the iPod's introduction.

In 2002, iriver scrambled to develop its first flash memory player to meet demand from the U.S. Best Buy chain. A year later, it was first to market with 512 MB and 1 GB players, and completed its IPO at KOSDAQ, a Korean stock exchange. By this time, the company was also selling hard drive players to compete with the iPod. It also used adult film star Jenna Jameson and an Audrey Hepburn lookalike as spokesmodels promoting its products.

Iriver adopted a new marketing strategy in 2005, attempting to grab mindshare from Apple. It referred to the U10 flash player as the thumb thing. This referred to users controlling their MP3 devices with their thumbs, just as they do their cell phones and text messaging devices. The company also announced plans for digital audio players featuring Internet telephony.

Iriver's U.S. unit, based in Vancouver, WA, held 3.4% of the U.S. MP3 player market in 2005, according to IDC. The company targets early adopters among American users as it tries to regain dominance of the category. It also opened sales divisions in Brazil, Germany, Hong Kong and Japan.

ReignCom announced in May, 2006 that it would adjust its focus toward handheld mobile gaming. It has also reported sluggish sales for its music player business, including a loss of 35.58 billion won (US$36.68 million) in 2005, compared with a net profit of 43.46 billion won in 2004. ReignCom also owns the Korean-language Yurion and Funcake entertainment services.

In its South Korean home market, iriver accounts for 50% of sales and the company has bought ads claiming its products are a symbol of patriotism. It also operates a small chain of iriver Zone stores, with locations in Korea, Japan, and China. The Incheon International Airport shop features a large heart-shaped art piece, which represents the corporate "Heartbeat Philosophy" of "dedication to its customers."

In May, 2007, Reigncom announced a new division, Reigncom USA, to manage the iriver brand in the United States and help develop new products. The company also bought the Siren brand in Japan from A-MAX Japan, despite protests from Siren Inc. itself

iriver's user interface is award winning and is one of the reasons why they are #1 when it comes to cd based mp3 players. Their flash players and the HD based players all use a similar interface (if not the same interface).

playing OGG files requires more cpu than playing mp3. It's a better format and grows in popularity.

irivers hardware is all flash upgradable. When I had their flash based unit, I was able to upgrade the software to one that had more features and bug fixes.

batt time should be one of your big concerns. irivers is longer, and unless you've had a remote with LDC screen before, you really don't know what you're missing out on. It's really that great.
